A quiet evening in the small community of Lyman, Iowa, was shattered by a tragic incident that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Chase A. Jones. On Thursday, July 11, 2019, the Cass County Sheriff's Office received a call about a shooting at a residence on Lyman Street and deputies responded to the scene around 7:00 p.m. Jones, a White male from the nearby city of Atlantic, was found with a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders from Griswold Rescue transported Jones to Cass County
Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The initial reports from the dispatch indicated that the fatal wound to his neck may have been the result of an accidental misfire of a nine-millimeter handgun.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office, along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny to determine the official cause of death.
