In the late summer of 2014, a profound tragedy struck the community of San Tan Valley, Arizona, with the death of 11-year-old Samuel Epps. The young boy, known as 'Sammy' to his loved ones, passed away on September 2, 2014. Investigations into his death revealed that Samuel died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Reports from the time indicate the incident occurred at his family's home.
Born on January 16, 2003, Samuel was a student at Benjamin Franklin Charter School's
Crismon Campus, where he was a member of the senior orchestra, playing the cello. He was described as a boy who loved Legos, superhero movies, and music. His family were active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In the wake of his sudden passing, the community rallied around the Epps family. A fundraising effort was initiated to assist with the unexpected funeral and burial costs, receiving an outpouring of support. Samuel was survived by his parents, Bryan and April Epps, and his three older siblings, McKayla, Bryanna, and Ethan. A celebration of his life was held on September 10, 2014, at the LDS Building in San Tan Valley, where hundreds gathered to remember the young boy and support his grieving family.
