On the evening of October 7, 2023, a celebratory night out for 35-year-old Hispanic male Rogelio Ochoa and his family ended in tragedy at the Gym Bar and Grill in San Tan Valley, Arizona. Ochoa, his brother, and their mother, who was visiting from New Mexico, had gone to the bar for a quick drink to celebrate his new home and job.
According to family, they felt unwelcome and decided to leave shortly after arriving.
As they were making their way out, they were reportedly followed and harassed, leading to a confrontation. It was during this altercation that Rogelio Ochoa, who was allegedly not directly involved in the initial dispute, was fatally shot.
Pinal County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the scene on Hunt Highway just before midnight regarding reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered Ochoa with a gunshot wound. Deputies performed life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived. Ochoa was then transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses at the scene directed deputies to a suspect who was walking a short distance from the bar. The individual, identified as 45-year-old Travis Armstrong, was taken into custody. Authorities also secured a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Armstrong was subsequently booked into the Pinal County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder. The investigation into the specific motives and the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting is ongoing.
