On the evening of September 6, 2014, the life of 28-year-old Shantel McCormick of Surprise, Arizona, was tragically cut short in a devastating act of violence. McCormick, a female, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on the Loop 101 freeway in Glendale. At approximately 7:30 p.m., an off-duty firefighter witnessed the car suddenly veer off the highway and crash into the desert landscape near 51st Avenue.
First responders arriving at the scene discovered a grim tableau; both McCormick and the driver, 29-year-old James Tucker of Kingman, were deceased inside the vehicle.
The initial crash investigation quickly turned into a homicide inquiry when it was discovered that both occupants had sustained gunshot wounds. A gun was recovered from within the vehicle, leading Glendale police detectives to piece together the sequence of events. The investigation revealed a history of domestic violence between McCormick and Tucker, who were the parents of two children. It was determined that Tucker had shot McCormick while he was driving before turning the gun on himself in a final, tragic act.
The case was officially ruled a homicide-suicide by the Glendale Police Department. The incident left two children orphaned and sent shockwaves through the community.
