In Phoenix, Arizona, a gathering to watch the Mayweather-Pacquiao boxing match on the night of May 2, 2015, ended in tragedy with the death of 24-year-old Erasmo Gonzales, a Hispanic male. Gonzales and his family were hosting the party at their home located near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road. His 22-year-old girlfriend, Marylin Alvarez, became upset when Gonzales left the house with his cousin to go to a Jack-in-the-Box after the fight.
According to witnesses, Alvarez was angry and
suspicious of his whereabouts. When Gonzales returned home, he went into the bedroom where Alvarez was waiting. He came out of the room upset and then went back in. A few seconds later, family members heard a single gunshot. They rushed into the bedroom to find Alvarez kneeling on the ground next to an unresponsive Gonzales. A gun was found lying nearby. Gonzales had been shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Alvarez, who was described as upset and emotional, did not make any statements to the family about what had transpired. After her arrest, she called her family and claimed that she had shot Gonzales by accident, also alleging that he had hit her. Investigators noted that Alvarez had scratches on her neck and forehead, as well as a bruise on her arm, which she claimed was from a previous incident. Gonzales' family members told police that he had come home with scratches on his face a couple of weeks prior and had said Alvarez had scratched him during a fight.
Marylin Rivera Alvarez was arrested and taken to a Maricopa County jail. She was held on a $500,000 bond on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of her boyfriend.
