In the late hours of a summer night in Glendale, Arizona, a gathering of friends turned into a scene of tragedy, irrevocably altering the lives of two families. It was on September 5, 2015, that 21-year-old Carson James Dumbrell, a White male, was fatally shot at a house party. The vibrant young man, known for his infectious smile and boundless energy, was pronounced dead at the scene near 67th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road.
The party, hosted by 21-year-old Jordan Hanson, had been a
small affair. As the night wore on, Hanson requested that his guests leave, sparking an argument with Dumbrell. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in Hanson firing a single gunshot that struck and killed Dumbrell. In the immediate aftermath, Hanson fled his home before police arrived.
However, it wasn't long before Hanson contacted the authorities from a nearby location and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree homicide. The case proceeded to a jury trial, where Hanson claimed he acted in self-defense. In February 2017, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, and he was later sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The criminal proceedings were not the end of the legal battles. Dumbrell's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hanson and his parents. While his parents were not found liable, a civil judgment ordered Hanson to pay more than $2 million to Dumbrell's family. Additionally, a criminal restitution order of over $560,000 was issued against Hanson. The case even reached the Arizona Supreme Court regarding the victim's mother's right to be involved in hearings about a delayed appeal sought by Hanson concerning the restitution order.
