In the community of Avondale, Arizona, a tragic incident unfolded that led to the death of a young boy. Five-year-old Savier Jones died from what authorities described as an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. The event took place inside his home, where he was present with his mother.
Subsequent investigations into the devastating event revealed that the handgun Savier found belonged to his father, Michael Jones.
Authorities determined that the firearm had been left loaded and was accessible to the child. As a result of the investigation conducted by the Avondale Police Department and the Department of Child Safety, Michael Jones faced serious charges. He was later charged with manslaughter and child abuse for recklessly causing the death of his son.
Prior to this fatal incident, the Department of Child Safety had received reports concerning the family. In 2011 and 2012, reports were made alleging neglect of Savier and his siblings by their mother. While the initial allegation was unsubstantiated, the second was substantiated, though the family declined services offered by the department at that time. Following Savier's death, the Department of Child Safety provided services to the family, and the other children in the home were assessed to be safe with a safety plan in place.
