On a summer morning in Washington, D.C., tragedy struck in the Washington Highlands neighborhood. On Friday, July 28, 2023, 56-year-old Charles Haywood Luster Jr., a male resident of Southeast, D.C., was shot and killed. The incident occurred around 11:47 a.m. in the 4200 block of 6th Street, Southeast.
Luster was not the only victim of this violent act. Alongside him, 20-year-old Tyjon Clayton, also of Southeast, D.C., was fatally shot.
When officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found both men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to the acting D.C. police chief, the two men were walking on the sidewalk when a red, four-door Jeep with four occupants pulled up. Two individuals reportedly exited the vehicle from the back and opened fire on Luster and Clayton. The shooters then got back into the Jeep and fled the scene.
As of the days following the shooting, no arrests had been made in connection with the double homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the case and has offered a substantial reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The total possible reward amount for this case is up to $50,000. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the police. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation.
