On the evening of October 8, 2016, in Glendale, Arizona, the life of 18-year-old Juan Antonio Diaz was tragically cut short. The young man, a male, was near a strip mall in the 6500 block of Bethany Home Road when the sound of gunshots pierced the night air. Glendale police officers, who happened to be in the vicinity on an unrelated matter, heard the shots and quickly responded to the scene.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Diaz inside his vehicle, suffering from a single gunshot
wound. Emergency responders promptly transported him to a local hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The incident left a community in shock over what was described as a senseless act of violence.
The investigation into the shooting led to a swift arrest. Authorities identified 19-year-old Javonte Dujuan Baker-Young as the suspect. According to police reports, Baker-Young had fired at Diaz's vehicle. He then proceeded to shoot at two security guards who were working at a nearby business, though fortunately, neither of the guards was injured.
After the shooting, Baker-Young attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by Glendale patrol officers. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Following his arrest, he admitted to firing at Diaz's vehicle and at the security guards. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
