In a tragic and violent outburst that shattered a quiet evening in Phoenix, Arizona, Robert Sykes, a 44-year-old man, was shot and killed on June 5, 2016. The incident was part of a wider shooting spree that claimed another life and left several others wounded.
The tragic events unfolded at a Motel 6 located on Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue. Sykes was a guest at the motel at the time of the incident.
The gunman, later identified as 28-year-old Daterryn McBride, entered the lobby and opened fire, striking three people. Robert Sykes and a motel employee, 44-year-old Brian Harris, were fatally wounded. A third victim, another motel employee, was left in extremely critical condition.
Following the initial shooting, McBride's rampage continued. He fled the motel and was involved in multiple carjackings and further shootings that injured others before he ultimately took his own life. The motive for the initial shooting at the Motel 6 remains unclear. Authorities reported that McBride had a criminal record, including a previous prison sentence for aggravated assault and misconduct involving weapons. He had been released from prison in August of 2014.
