In the warm evening hours of June 7, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona, a burst of violence shattered the tranquility of Mission Manor Park, leaving two men dead. One of the victims was 20-year-old Roman Nieto. He, along with 26-year-old Guillermo Ortiz-Morales, was in the western parking lot of the park when a verbal disagreement with another man escalated with deadly speed.
The unidentified male produced a handgun and opened fire on Nieto and Ortiz-Morales.
The gunshots, which rang out at approximately 10:15 p.m., prompted several calls to the Tucson Police Department. Upon their arrival, officers discovered citizens attempting to provide first aid to the two men who were lying on the ground with critical injuries. Despite these efforts, both Roman Nieto and Guillermo Ortiz-Morales succumbed to their wounds and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The shooter had fled the area in a dark-colored passenger car, possibly a Dodge or a Chrysler.
In the immediate aftermath, homicide detectives began their investigation, learning that numerous people were at the park when the shooting occurred. They described the suspect as a Hispanic male with a stocky build. A month after the fatal shooting, the families of Nieto and Ortiz-Morales made a public plea for assistance in finding the person responsible for their deaths, but years later, the case remains unsolved. There have been no arrests, and no suspect has been publicly identified in the killing of Roman Nieto and Guillermo Ortiz-Morales.
