In El Mirage, Arizona, on a Thursday night in April 2018, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 17-year-old Raymond Vargas. That evening, Raymond was driving with four other teenagers, aged 16 to 19, when their vehicle was targeted by gunfire. The hail of bullets resulted in Raymond being struck in the chest, while another passenger sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

First responders arrived at the scene near 129th Avenue and Dahlia Drive to find a chaotic scene of a car crash and the sounds of gunshots still echoing in the neighborhood. They discovered Raymond lying on the ground next to the wrecked car. A resident in the area had bravely come out of his home to render aid and perform life-saving measures on the young man before paramedics arrived. Raymond and the other injured passenger were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts to save him, Raymond Vargas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, El Mirage police began their investigation. Witnesses reported seeing multiple suspects flee the area immediately after the incident. The investigation led to a significant development two days later when authorities arrested a 15-year-old male in connection with the homicide. While the name of the teenage suspect was not publicly released, he was taken into custody on a charge of homicide. Police continued to search for other potential suspects involved in the shooting. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators.
Raymond's mother, Karen Vargas, was thrust into a nightmare, having lost her husband just three years prior. She described her son as a happy person who got along with everyone and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a student at Valley Vista High School in Surprise. The community rallied around the grieving family, with a GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral expenses. His mother expressed immense gratitude to the neighbor who had tried to save her son's life, stating it meant a lot to her that he took a chance to help despite the potential danger.
