Sumi Gail Juan, a 32-year-old Native American woman and member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, was last seen in early October 2010 near Hoopa Elementary School in Hoopa, California. She was reported missing on October 29, 2010, after not being seen by her family for weeks. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being 5'10", weighing 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Sumi also had a birthmark on the back of her left calf and was known to wear eyeglasses.
Sumi was a single mother, and her disappearance has been surrounded by suspicious circumstances. Before her disappearance, she had suffered from several health issues and was also a victim of domestic violence. Authorities sought to question two individuals, Robert Hodge Jr. and Debra Jealous-Of-Him, who may have been with Sumi around the time she went missing. However, neither of them was considered a suspect.
Despite various efforts, Sumi has never been found, and her case remains unsolved. Her disappearance is part of the broader issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, a crisis that continues to receive insufficient attention.
