Merrianna Virginia Royce, an 8-year-old girl, was last seen on April 3, 1988, in Hoopa, California, along with her mother, Marilyn Royce. The pair disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and on April 16, 1988, their maroon 1980 AMC Eagle station wagon was found abandoned on Onion Mountain Road near Fish Lake. A note found with the vehicle indicated that they intended to return for it, but they never did. The vehicle appeared to have gotten stuck in the snow, and the mother and daughter were reported missing on May 17, 1988.
On July 11, 1988, the remains of Merrianna's mother, Marilyn, were found in the Bluff Creek drainage area on Onion Mountain in Del Norte County, California. Marilyn's death was determined to be the result of exposure, but despite extensive searches of the surrounding area, no trace of Merrianna has ever been found.
Merrianna's disappearance remains unsolved, and she is still listed as missing. Authorities continue to hope for new information that could help locate her or bring closure to her case.
