On a tragic afternoon in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 15-year-old Hispanic male, Christian Garcia-Sanchez, was cut short in an act of domestic violence. On June 21, 2018, Christian was fatally shot by his stepfather, 49-year-old Donald Stanley, who also turned the gun on Christian's mother before taking his own life. The harrowing incident unfolded inside their home in the 10400 block of East Windstorm Drive, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock.
Christian's mother sustained critical injuries but ultimately survived the attack.
The alarm was raised by Christian's 10-year-old brother, who bravely fled the residence after witnessing his mother being shot and sought help from a neighbor. The neighbor promptly called 911, reporting a possible shooting. When Tucson Police Department officers arrived, the young boy recounted the horrific events that had transpired, telling them his father had shot his mother and possibly his brother. The gravity of the situation prompted the deployment of the Tucson Police SWAT Unit, Hostage Negotiations Unit, and Bomb Unit.
Hostage negotiators were unable to make contact with anyone inside the home. To assess the situation safely, the Bomb Unit's robot was deployed, which revealed the body of an adult male and an injured adult female on the floor. SWAT members then entered the residence to render aid. Tragically, upon searching the home, they discovered Christian deceased in a back bedroom. Investigators from the Homicide and Domestic Violence units determined that Donald Stanley had shot his wife and stepson before committing suicide. The 10-year-old boy was physically unharmed and was placed in the care of extended family while his mother recovered.
Following the incident, it was revealed that the Arizona Department of Child Safety had prior contact with the family. In November 2014, a report alleged neglect of Christian by his mother and Stanley, specifically that Stanley would force the teenager to leave the home on weekends. However, the investigation did not find sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations, and the case was closed. DCS also had a history with Stanley dating back to 2006 concerning allegations of abuse and neglect involving a child from another relationship. In that instance, a neglect allegation against Stanley was substantiated. As the perpetrator, Donald Stanley, died by suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with Christian Garcia-Sanchez's death.
