In the early morning hours of October 16, 2019, the life of 18-year-old Corey Teixeira was cut short in Tucson, Arizona. What began as an alleged attempt to break into a home in midtown Tucson ended in a fatal shooting that would leave two young men dead.
At approximately 3:45 a.m., a woman residing in a house in the 4700 block of East Duncan Street was awakened by noises coming from the back of her residence.
Upon investigating, she confronted two individuals, later identified as Corey Teixeira and Ali Mohamed, also 18, who were allegedly trying to force their way into her home. In the ensuing confrontation, the homeowner discharged a firearm, striking both men.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the two wounded men at the rear of the house. Corey Teixeira was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ali Mohamed was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators suggested that the attempted home invasion did not appear to be a random act and could be related to narcotics. While the initial focus was on whether the shootings were an act of self-defense, the investigation took a different turn. The homeowner was later indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including possession of a dangerous drug for sale, money laundering, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony drug offense.
