In a tragic turn of events on April 7, 2020, 18-year-old Tyler Thomas, a White male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a shopping center at the intersection of South Houghton Road and East Rita Road in Tucson, Arizona. The incident, which unfolded around 4:38 p.m., was the result of a prearranged meeting between two groups of people who were known to each other and had an existing conflict.
Authorities reported that the meeting was related to a drug transaction.
During the encounter, individuals from both groups entered a vehicle together. An altercation broke out inside the car, and at least one person from each group was armed. In the ensuing struggle, multiple shots were fired, and Thomas was struck several times. Another individual in the vehicle sustained minor injuries from the gunfire.
Tucson Police Department officers and the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the scene where they found Thomas with obvious signs of gunshot trauma. Despite their efforts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed led to the identification of two juvenile suspects.
Seventeen-year-old Troy Hughes and 17-year-old James I. Schuermann were subsequently arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Both teenagers were charged with first-degree felony murder, armed robbery, and aggravated robbery. The investigation concluded that the shooting was not a random act of violence, as the individuals involved were acquainted with one another prior to the deadly encounter.
