In the summer of 2025, a day of violence and terror unfolded in Tucson, Arizona, culminating in the tragic death of 69-year-old Ricky Miller. The harrowing series of events began on the morning of June 30th, when a man later identified as 42-year-old Julio Aguirre, a previously deported felon, embarked on a crime spree. His first alleged act was an attempted burglary where he threatened a homeowner with a gun before fleeing the scene.
Shortly after, just after 6:45 a.m., the violence
escalated in the 2100 block of S. Winstel Avenue. It was here that Ricky Miller, inside his vehicle, was confronted by Aguirre. An argument erupted, reportedly over Aguirre's attempt to steal Miller's Toyota Tundra. Witnesses reported hearing verbal threats just moments before a single gunshot rang out. Miller was struck by the gunfire, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Aguirre was also alleged to have pointed his firearm at two witnesses during the confrontation.
The crime spree did not end with the fatal shooting. Aguirre then reportedly forced his way into a nearby home, holding several family members at gunpoint and acting erratically. While some of the occupants managed to escape, one person remained inside with him. By the time police arrived, Aguirre had fled. A manhunt involving the Tucson Police Department's SWAT Team, K-9 Unit, and Air Support was launched to locate the suspect.
The search for Julio Aguirre concluded just before 9:20 a.m. when he was found hiding in a shed in the 2100 block of S. Richey Boulevard. He was taken into custody, sustaining a dog bite from a K-9 unit during his apprehension. Aguirre now faces a litany of charges, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault for the events of that tragic morning. The case has drawn national attention due to a jurisdictional dispute between state and federal authorities over his prosecution. Aguirre is also facing federal charges related to the attempted carjacking and for being an undocumented immigrant in possession of a firearm.
