In the early morning hours of August 11, 2021, a dispute between two men who knew each other escalated to a fatal conclusion in a parking lot on East Speedway Boulevard in Tucson, Arizona. Christopher Victor Romero, a 29-year-old male, was shot following a confrontation with another man. He was rushed to Banner University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The father of a young son, Romero was remembered by his family as a beloved son and brother.
The man suspected of the shooting, 29-year-old Salvador Ricardo Blancas, fled the scene before police arrived. However, he later turned himself in to the Marana Police Department. Blancas was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was then booked into the Pima County Jail.
The legal proceedings that followed revealed a complex history between the two men, including a prior altercation. The case went before multiple grand juries, and issues were raised regarding the presentation of evidence related to a possible self-defense claim. Ultimately, in November 2024, a jury found Salvador Ricardo Blancas not guilty of second-degree murder, concluding that he had acted in self-defense. The Pima County Attorney's Office expressed disappointment with the verdict but stated they respected the jury's decision.
