In the spring of 2020, a tragedy unfolded in a Phoenix, Arizona apartment complex that claimed the life of Janine Lily, a 36-year-old Black / African American woman. On the evening of May 6th, the sound of a gunshot shattered the peace near 19th and Glendale avenues, prompting a swift police response. Officers arriving at the scene witnessed a harrowing sight as Janine emerged from an apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the severity of her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead. The events that led to this violent outcome were soon pieced together by investigators. Inside the apartment, they discovered the body of 39-year-old Johnny Watson, who authorities identified as the man responsible for shooting Janine. It was determined that Watson had taken his own life after the assault, classifying the incident as a murder-suicide.
The tragedy was compounded by the presence of two children within the apartment at the time of the shootings. In a moment of relief amidst the sorrow, police were able to safely rescue the children from the scene.
