In the summer of 2021, a violent encounter in a Sierra Vista, Arizona restaurant parking lot cut short the lives of 25-year-old Landan James Klein and his partner, Honeylynne Garcia, also 25. The couple was shot and killed on the evening of July 13 in what authorities would later describe as a dispute over a drug debt. Klein, a male, died shortly after being transported to Canyon Vista Medical Center, while Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double
homicide quickly led to a suspect, 21-year-old Devon Nathaniel Neff of Sierra Vista. Neff initially fled the scene of the shooting but turned himself in to the police shortly after. He claimed to have acted in self-defense. However, surveillance footage from a camera in the vicinity of the restaurant told a different story. The video showed Klein driving into the parking lot and approaching Neff's vehicle. After Klein got out of his car and went to the driver's side of Neff's car, Neff was seen pointing a gun out of his window and shooting Klein. The footage then captured Neff exiting his vehicle, walking towards the back of his car, and shooting Garcia as she sat in the passenger seat of Klein's vehicle. After firing multiple shots at Garcia, Neff got back into his car and drove away.
The case took another turn when, on the day following the murders, two of Honeylynne Garcia's brothers were arrested. DJ Leeroyce Garcia, 27, and Roger Carlos Garcia, 21, were taken into custody after police, who had the victims' home under surveillance, observed them removing items from the residence. A search of their vehicle uncovered illegal drugs, cash, and several firearms. The brothers had driven from California after learning of their sister's death. They later entered into plea deals for their roles in removing evidence from the home.
Devon Nathaniel Neff was charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and one count of intentional second-degree murder. He was held in the Cochise County jail on a no-bond order. The investigation revealed that the motive for the killings was a dispute over money owed for drugs. A search of Neff's residence after the shooting also resulted in the seizure of illegal drugs and paraphernalia.
