Avery Young, a 19-year-old Black / African American male from Phoenix, Arizona, was killed in a burst of gunfire on the night of August 19, 2021, in a parking lot near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road in west Phoenix. News reports describe a chaotic scene in which a group of young men met up at that location after arranging a business transaction over social media, placing them in a busy commercial area that police later treated as a major crime scene.
