On October 4, 2021, DEA Special Agent Michael G. Garbo was fatally shot during an interdiction operation on an Amtrak train in downtown Tucson, Arizona. Garbo, a 16-year veteran of the DEA, was part of a team that included investigators from the DEA’s Phoenix Field Division and officers from the Tucson Police Department. They were conducting a routine check for items such as drugs and guns as part of a Counter Narcotics Alliance investigation when the incident occurred.
