In the evening hours of February 13, 2022, a call to 911 reporting shots fired brought Phoenix police officers to a residence in the area of 6200 South 11th Avenue. Inside the home, they discovered 41-year-old Jon Scarano, a male, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite any medical attention he may have received, Mr. Scarano succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also present at the home was 28-year-old Richard Williams, who identified himself as the 911 caller.
Williams told the investigating officers that he had shot Scarano, alleging that Scarano had broken into his home. However, as detectives processed the scene and gathered evidence, they began to find inconsistencies between Williams's account of a home invasion and the physical evidence before them.
Due to the conflicting nature of his statements when compared with the evidence found at the scene, Richard Williams was taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County Jail on a charge of homicide. At the time of the initial reports, the police investigation into the death of Jon Scarano was still active and ongoing to uncover the full circumstances of the shooting.
