On a summer evening in Phoenix, Arizona, a family dispute over a seemingly trivial matter escalated into a tragic act of violence, leaving a 51-year-old man dead. Denzell Williams was fatally shot on July 17, 2022, following an altercation with his nephew, Dajoun Miller. The argument reportedly began over who would get to sleep on the couch in their shared home near the intersection of 7th Street and Baseline Road.
The conflict had been brewing, with the 22-year-old Miller having sent a
text message to his mother earlier, indicating his intent to fight his uncle for the sleeping spot. The verbal disagreement soon turned deadly. Family members who were present in the home reported hearing the two men arguing, followed by the sound of gunshots. When they rushed to the living room, they witnessed a horrifying scene: Miller was standing over his uncle, Denzell Williams, holding a gun.
Despite the family's pleas for him to stop, Miller allegedly fired another shot at his uncle. When police arrived, they found Williams on the couch with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators discovered at least thirteen 9mm casings around his body.
Dajoun Miller surrendered to the officers who arrived at the home, admitting that he had just shot someone. He also informed them that he had disassembled the firearm and disclosed the locations of its parts, which were later recovered from various places in the house and the backyard. During questioning, Miller claimed he was angry with Williams for disrespecting him and later alleged that his uncle had threatened to harm the family. However, Miller's mother told authorities that her son had undiagnosed mental health issues and experienced hallucinations, a claim that Miller himself denied. Dajoun Miller was arrested and subsequently booked into jail on a charge of first-degree murder, with his bond set at $1 million.
