On November 5, 2022, a promising life was cut short when 23-year-old Brandon Michael Tukes was fatally shot in Glendale, Arizona. Tukes, a Black / African American male, had relocated to Arizona from Des Moines, Iowa, with aspirations of becoming a police officer. A former high school football standout at Lincoln High School, he was known for his outgoing personality and was described as a natural-born leader.
His death left a profound void in the lives of his loved ones, including his mother and his young son, who was born in March of the same year.
The fatal encounter occurred at an establishment that housed a tattoo parlor and a barber shop near 51st Avenue and Camelback Road. Security footage from the business captured Tukes engaged in what appeared to be a contentious conversation. The confrontation escalated, tragically ending with Tukes being shot.
In connection with the shooting, a 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The teenager claimed that his actions were an attempt to defend another person who was involved in the argument with Tukes. The death of Brandon Tukes set off a devastating chain of events for his family. Less than two months later, his 16-year-old half-brother was fatally shot by police in Des Moines during a disturbance. This was followed by more violence, including a deadly shooting at an educational program for at-risk youth in Des Moines, which was reportedly connected to the preceding tragedies.
