In the early hours of a Tuesday in Phoenix, Arizona, a young man's life was cut tragically short in a violent confrontation. Manuel 'Manny' Montoya Hinojos, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, died on March 14, 2023, after he was shot while confronting burglars at his residence near 29th Avenue and Moreland Street. The incident began when Hinojos discovered three teenage males in the act of burglarizing his home.
Armed with a firearm, Hinojos confronted the intruders.
While two of the teens fled the scene on foot, one remained and an exchange of gunfire erupted between him and Hinojos. In the ensuing shootout, both Hinojos and the teenage suspect sustained gunshot wounds. Phoenix police responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m., where they found both individuals injured.
Emergency services transported both Hinojos and the wounded teenager to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, Manuel Hinojos succumbed to his injuries. The teenage suspect he had exchanged fire with survived and was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital. A subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of all three teenagers involved in the burglary. They were later referred to the Juvenile Correction Center, and authorities have stated that there are no other suspects being sought in connection with this case.
