Irma Rivera-Martinez, a 25-year-old woman, was working her shift at a Chevron gas station located at 51st Avenue and Glendale Avenue in Glendale, Arizona, on the night of Friday, April 21, 2023, when her life was tragically cut short. A man, heavily disguised in all black clothing and a face mask, entered the convenience store and specifically sought her out.
While she was stocking shelves, the assailant followed her to another part of the store and opened fire, shooting her at least 10 times with a handgun. The attack was brutal and quick, and the suspect fled the scene on foot immediately after. Another employee was present in the store at the time but was unharmed. Nothing was taken from the store, leading investigators to believe it was a targeted attack rather than a robbery gone wrong.
The senseless murder of Irma, described by loved ones as a caring and generous person who often helped the local homeless community, left her family and the community in shock and searching for answers. A makeshift memorial grew outside the gas station as those who knew her mourned her loss. Her family, too emotional to speak publicly at length, expressed their devastation and confusion as to why anyone would target her. They were haunted by the question of the motive behind such a violent act.
Within days, Glendale police made an arrest in the case, bringing a sense of relief to the grieving family. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Muhammad Hussein Atayi. The breakthrough in the investigation came from extensive surveillance footage from the Chevron and surrounding businesses. This footage captured the suspect, including his distinctive clothing and a pair of 'Old Skool Flame' Vans shoes. The video also showed a dark blue Toyota Camry that the suspect parked in a nearby alleyway before circling the area and then entering the gas station. Investigators were able to track the vehicle and identify Atayi. Upon executing a search warrant at his residence, detectives found clothing matching what the suspect wore during the murder, as well as the firearm believed to be the murder weapon. Atayi has been uncooperative with investigators, and the motive for the targeted killing of Irma Rivera-Martinez remains unknown. He is facing a charge of first-degree premeditated murder.
