Jordin Miranda Castillo, a 20-year-old woman, was in her Glendale, Arizona, apartment on the afternoon of June 4, 2023, with several friends and her two-year-old daughter. The father of her child, 22-year-old Rueben Xavier Rocha, with whom she had a history of domestic violence, approached the third-floor apartment. Castillo had previously obtained an order of protection against Rocha in April of that year.
Dressed in all black with a facemask and hoodie, Rocha jumped from the stairway
to her balcony and began to kick in the glass patio door. Inside, Castillo frantically called 911, reporting his presence and the protective order. Within seconds of her call, Rocha started firing a handgun through the door into the apartment. The gunshots struck Castillo and two of her female friends, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old. Amid the chaos, another woman in the apartment managed to grab Castillo's daughter and hide with her in a bathroom, while a male friend also escaped injury.
After firing several rounds, Rocha fled the scene on foot. Emergency services arrived and transported the three shooting victims to a local hospital. Jordin Miranda Castillo was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her two friends were treated for their injuries and were last reported to be in stable condition. The following day, about 24 hours after the shooting, Rueben Xavier Rocha turned himself in to the Glendale Police Department. He faces charges of murder, burglary, and aggravated assault.
