In the winter of 2016, a horrific act of violence shattered a Glendale, Arizona family and the community that surrounded them. On February 23rd, 18-year-old Kaitlin Buckner, a recent graduate of Ironwood High School with dreams of becoming an ultrasound technician, was tragically killed. She was a young woman full of promise, studying at Gateway Community College and excitedly planning for her future.
Just days before her life was cut short, she had enjoyed a simple dinner with her best friend, chatting about school, relationships, and the children she hoped to have one day.
The ordinary rhythms of the Buckner household were irrevocably broken when Kaitlin's older brother, 26-year-old Alex Buckner, began a violent rampage against his own family. In the midst of the chaos, dispatchers received harrowing 911 calls from inside the home, with the callers identifying Alex as the shooter. By the time police arrived at the residence near 51st Avenue and Cactus, the house was engulfed in flames, a deliberate act of arson initiated by Alex. First responders faced an active shooter situation as they fought the blaze, hearing gunshots from within the home.
In a desperate attempt to save lives, officers entered the burning structure and managed to pull Kaitlin from the inferno. She was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. The horror within the home was far from over. Authorities discovered the bodies of Kaitlin's parents, 50-year-old Vic and 49-year-old Kimberly Buckner, as well as her younger sister, 6-year-old Emma.
The suspect, Alex Buckner, was later confronted by a tactical team inside the residence. Armed and refusing to surrender, he was shot and killed by police. In the aftermath, family members revealed that Alex had a history of drug use and suffered from severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, which they believed led to the unspeakable tragedy. The incident left a community in mourning and a family torn apart by a devastating act of domestic violence.
