On a warm evening in Tempe, Arizona, on August 19, 2023, a dispute that began over the volume of music tragically escalated, ending the life of 28-year-old Chase Dunphy. The male victim was at his residence near McClintock and Watson Drives, a home he shared with several roommates, including the man who would be accused of his murder, Michael Aaron Coupland.
The incident began to unfold around 8:00 p.m. as Coupland and his girlfriend were moving their belongings into the house.
An argument started when they asked Dunphy to lower his music. Although apologies were exchanged and the initial disagreement seemed to subside, tensions flared again. Dunphy reportedly became upset, asserting his right to play music as he pleased in what he considered his home, and began throwing and breaking things in the living room.
The conflict moved outside when Coupland ran out the front door with Dunphy in pursuit. As Dunphy approached with his fists balled, Coupland fired a single shot from his pistol, striking him in the chest. In a devastating turn, the same bullet also struck Coupland's girlfriend in the hand as she had stepped between the two men in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Chase Dunphy died at the scene from his injuries.
Following the shooting, Michael Aaron Coupland was arrested. During the investigation, he admitted to authorities that he knew Dunphy was unarmed and intoxicated at the time of the confrontation. Coupland was subsequently booked into jail on charges of second-degree murder and endangerment.
