On a Monday morning in Tempe, Arizona, 51-year-old John Lucas, a male Lyft driver, began his workday, picking up two passengers for a ride to the nearby town of Guadalupe. The trip took a tragic turn on September 22, 2025, when he was shot and killed by one of his passengers in what authorities believe was an attempted robbery of his vehicle. Friends and family described Lucas as a beloved dog lover, an avid tennis player, and a person with a personality larger than life.
He was known for his kindness and his willingness to help others, and was a founding member of a nonprofit social group in Delaware.
The events leading to Lucas's death unfolded after his passengers, a man and a woman, had reportedly been awake for days and using methamphetamine. As they neared their destination in Guadalupe, the male passenger, identified as 29-year-old Angel Lopez, allegedly shot Lucas multiple times.
