On the evening of Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the life of Alexis Rodriguez, a 35-year-old Hispanic woman, was cut short in Yuma, Arizona. Rodriguez and a 34-year-old male companion were seated in a parked vehicle near Avenue B and Third Street when they were both struck by gunfire.
The male victim, despite his own injuries, managed to drive them to the Yuma Regional Medical Center.
He was treated for his wounds and later released, but Rodriguez succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. At the time of her death, Rodriguez was pregnant. In the wake of the tragedy, her sister created a GoFundMe page to seek support for the family, writing, "As you can imagine her sudden death is very difficult emotionally as we also prepare for what is next."
The Yuma Police Department investigated the shooting, which they described as an isolated and targeted act, not a random one. The investigation led them to identify 28-year-old Alexander Ruben Delcid as the suspect. In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 16, 2023, Delcid was apprehended and taken into custody.
Delcid was formally charged with five counts, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Alexis Rodriguez and her unborn child, and one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of the male victim. His bond was set at $2 million.
After more than a year of legal proceedings, Delcid was presented with a plea offer from the state. In October 2025, he accepted the plea deal and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The following month, in November 2025, Alexander Delcid was sentenced to 18 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections. He was credited with 759 days already served.
