In the early morning hours of September 25, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Mia Padilla was tragically cut short in Phoenix, Arizona. The fatal incident began to unfold around 2:15 a.m. when Phoenix police officers in the vicinity of Central and Southern Avenues heard the distinct sound of multiple gunshots. Their attention was immediately drawn to a vehicle speeding away from the area.
The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to comply, initiating a pursuit that would end in a crash near 2nd Avenue and Broadway Road.
Upon reaching the vehicle, which had collided with a stack of wood pallets, officers discovered a chaotic and violent scene. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Omar Rivas, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. Inside the car, they found Mia Padilla in the back seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her lower extremities. A male passenger, Ricardo Mendoza Sanchez, had been shot in the leg. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Mia Padilla succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Further investigation by detectives revealed that the events leading to the chase and shooting stemmed from a residential burglary call in the area of 7th Street and Carter Road. A homeowner had reported an exchange of gunfire with suspects who then fled the scene. The vehicle that crashed was connected to this home invasion. The homeowner was questioned by police and subsequently released.
Following the investigation, both Omar Rivas and Ricardo Mendoza Sanchez were arrested. Rivas was booked on multiple felony counts, including first-degree murder. After being released from the hospital, Sanchez was also taken into custody and faced several felony charges, including first-degree murder, robbery, and assault, in connection with the home invasion and the subsequent death of Mia Padilla.
