On September 25, 2023, a fatal incident occurred in south Phoenix that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Mia Padilla. The event began with an apparent home invasion near Second Avenue and Broadway Road. A homeowner reported being pistol-whipped during the robbery but managed to retrieve his semiautomatic rifle from a bedroom.
