In the early morning hours of February 12, 2024, the quiet of a Phoenix, Arizona neighborhood was shattered by a domestic violence call that would unravel a tragic family story. Inside a home near 35th Street and Campo Bello Drive, 73-year-old Sam Allan Miller, a white male, and his 72-year-old wife, Marjorie Jeanne Valentine, were found deceased from gunshot wounds. Sam was a U.S.
Navy veteran, and both he and his wife were described as lifelong residents of Phoenix and active members of their church.
Responding to the scene around 5:15 a.m., Phoenix police were met by the couple's 38-year-old son, Jim Miller, who was the one who placed the call. Initially, Jim Miller claimed that his father had shot his mother before turning the gun on himself in a tragic murder-suicide. However, as detectives began their investigation, inconsistencies in his story emerged. A roommate who was also present in the home at the time was found unharmed.
Under questioning, Jim Miller's initial account crumbled, and he ultimately confessed to detectives that he had shot both of his parents during the night. Following his admission, Jim Miller was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder. During the investigation, it was revealed that he had a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and had not been taking his prescribed medication. He also admitted to using methamphetamine on the night of the killings. Court documents indicated a prior history of violent behavior, including a 2018 incident where he had pointed a gun at his mother and a roommate. The investigation into the double homicide remains active.
