In the early morning hours of May 30, 2024, the life of 38-year-old Genoveva Antillon, a Hispanic female, was tragically cut short in a shooting outside her home in south Phoenix. The incident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. near 16th Street and Broadway Road, a detail that would soon become the focal point of a homicide investigation. Responding to a call about a shooting, officers arrived at the scene to find Ms. Antillon suffering from a gunshot wound in front of a mobile home.
First responders quickly transported her to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the death of Genoveva, who was affectionately known as 'Gorda,' quickly led authorities to a suspect. Maury Williamson, a 35-year-old man, was on the property at the time of the shooting and was questioned by homicide detectives. Initially, witnesses on the property claimed to have only heard the gunshots. However, Williamson provided statements that were inconsistent with the evidence at the crime scene. Under further questioning, he admitted to firing the weapon.
According to his account, the shooting was a tragic accident. Williamson claimed that he was attempting to shoot a dog on the property that he believed was attacking him. In a tragic twist of fate, the bullet struck Antillon, who was reportedly behind the dog. Following his admission, investigators obtained a search warrant and discovered a firearm hidden inside the mobile home. Williamson was subsequently arrested and booked on multiple felony charges, including manslaughter, weapons violations, and tampering with evidence.
