In the summer of 2021, a quiet Phoenix, Arizona neighborhood was rocked by a tragedy that unfolded within the walls of a family home. On August 8th, 56-year-old Irene Lujan, her 63-year-old husband Lewis Lujan, and their 30-year-old son Matthew Lujan, were found deceased in their residence. Irene, known for her bubbly personality and love for games, worked for the Arizona Department of Economic Security where she was a cherished colleague.
The grim discovery was made after their other
son, Brandon Michael Lujan, then 34, sought treatment at a local hospital for an ankle injury. While at the hospital, he confessed to the medical staff that he had killed his family the previous night. This prompted a police welfare check at the Lujan home, where officers discovered the three deceased family members. It was later revealed that Brandon had been kicked out of his parents' home, an event that seems to have preceded the horrific events.
The investigation that followed painted a harrowing picture of the events that transpired. Brandon's own daughters, who were in his car at the time, told investigators they heard their father say, 'I'm going to kill them all,' before he entered the house. An argument between Brandon and his brother Matthew escalated, leading to Brandon fatally shooting Matthew. When his parents, Irene and Lewis, came out of a room and lunged at him, he shot them as well, firing so many rounds that he had to reload his weapon.
Brandon Michael Lujan was subsequently arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder. In July 2024, he was found guilty and sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life in prison. His wife, Raylien Loest, was also implicated and sentenced to three years in prison for her role in driving the getaway car. The tragic event left a void in the lives of their surviving family and friends, who remembered Irene and Lewis as a loving couple who had been married for 34 years and were always willing to help others.
