On an April evening in 2023, a 25-year-old woman named Maria Ledesma Ramirez was working her shift as a manager at a Burger King on 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road in Phoenix, Arizona. A dedicated single mother of two young boys, Maria was known by her loved ones as a fighter whose priority was always her children. She had been with the fast-food restaurant for about two years and had been promoted to manager just a few months after being hired.
The night of April 12, 2023, turned tragic
when her ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Gerardo Vazquez Alvarez, entered the restaurant. The two had a contentious phone call earlier, in which they argued about their children and relationship, a conversation that reportedly ended with a threat on her life. A co-worker recalled Maria receiving several calls from a private number before she finally answered and was brought to tears by the conversation. She confided in her co-worker that her ex-boyfriend had threatened to kill her. About ten minutes later, Alvarez arrived at the Burger King, ordered food, and sat down. He then waited for Maria to come to the front counter.
As Maria stood at the counter, being hugged by a teenage co-worker who was consoling her, Alvarez walked up and opened fire. Maria Ledesma Ramirez was fatally wounded and died at the scene. Her teenage colleague was also critically injured in the shooting but survived. Alvarez fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Phoenix police detectives launched an investigation and, through witness statements and surveillance footage, quickly identified Gerardo Vazquez Alvarez as the suspect. He was located and taken into custody hours later in south Phoenix after officers from the Special Assignments Unit disabled his vehicle. During an interview with detectives, Alvarez admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder. In April 2024, Alvarez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempt to commit second-degree murder, and disorderly conduct. He was later sentenced to 42 years in prison for the murder of the young mother.
