In the small town of Walnut Grove, Mississippi, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic event that ended the life of Tonya Johnson Barton. The 37-year-old female kindergarten teacher was shot and killed on June 6, 2015. The incident, which took place at a residence on Main Street, was the first fatal shooting in the town since 1979.
The violence erupted from a family disturbance. During the altercation, Tonya's estranged husband, Luke Barton, shot her multiple times. Also injured in the shooting were Tonya's father, Donald Johnson, and her mother, Addie Johnson. Both were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for their injuries. The quiet community was left in shock by the sudden and violent nature of the event that took the life of the beloved teacher from Leake Center Elementary School.
In the aftermath, Luke Barton was identified as the shooter and was subsequently arrested. A Leake County grand jury indicted him on November 4, 2015, for the first-degree murder of his wife, Tonya Barton. He also faced charges of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
On January 7, 2016, Luke Barton pleaded guilty to all charges during a plea hearing. The court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife. He also received concurrent 15-year sentences for each of the aggravated assault charges.
