The incident occurred on September 1, 2024, at a construction site near 39th Street and Thomas Road where Whitworth and his 19-year-old colleague, Jamal Avery, were repairing a fence. An argument with a man escalated to violence when the suspect produced a firearm and shot both Whitworth and Avery multiple times, even firing at them after they were on the ground.
Whitworth was pronounced dead at the scene, while Avery was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Family members described Whitworth as a hardworking and caring man who had recently started his own electrical company and was taking on extra work to provide for his family. He was a father of three and was remembered by his loved ones as a wonderful and dedicated parent. His family expressed their profound grief over the senseless act of violence that took his life.

Their efforts led to the arrest of 31-year-old Marquea Cato on September 19, 2024, in connection with the shooting. Cato was subsequently booked into jail.
