In the early hours of January 31, 2016, the life of 25-year-old Caucasian male, Joshua R. Hartwig, was tragically cut short in Lincoln, Nebraska. The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. near the 1800 block of Knox Street. Earlier in the night, a dispute had occurred between a man and a woman at this location. Approximately 30 minutes after that confrontation, an individual returned to the scene and fired multiple shots into a group of people standing outside, striking Hartwig in the neck and
fatally wounding him.
Joshua was a beloved figure in his community, known for his enthusiastic participation in the Special Olympics of Nebraska as an award-winning basketball and football player. His passion for sports extended to being an avid fan of Nebraska football and baseball. Beyond his athletic endeavors, Hartwig was a dedicated volunteer, generously giving his time to distribute food at Calvary United Methodist Church and the Barnabas Community Center. His mother described him as being developmentally delayed, noting that while he was 25, he operated at a different level, which made his sudden death even more profound for his loved ones.
Following the shooting, authorities identified Anthony Wells, then 35, of Omaha as the suspect. Wells was apprehended in Omaha on an unrelated charge before being charged with first-degree murder in connection to Hartwig's death. In January 2017, a jury convicted Wells of first-degree murder and several weapons charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder, with an additional 50 to 80 years for the weapons offenses.
Wells later appealed his conviction, citing what he claimed were errors by the trial court and ineffective counsel. However, in June 2018, the Nebraska Supreme Court denied his appeal and upheld both his conviction and his sentence, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for the senseless act that ended a young man's life. The community and his family continue to mourn the loss of a man who was known for his kind words, warm hugs, and radiant smile.
