In the morning hours of March 23, 2016, the life of Theodore E. Williams, a 31-year-old Black/African American male, came to a tragic end in a north Omaha, Nebraska residence. The scene, near North 46th Street and Kansas Avenue, was one of violence that left neighbors shaken by the sound of gunshots in the daylight.
Omaha police were called to the home around 10 a.m. and discovered a grim tableau. Inside, Theodore E. Williams was found deceased from a gunshot wound.
Two other individuals, identified as 54-year-old Charles Whitney and 31-year-old Sheretta Johnson, were also found with gunshot wounds. Both Whitney and Johnson were transported to a hospital and survived their injuries.
As detectives began to piece together the events of that morning, the narrative that emerged was one of a domestic dispute that had escalated to a devastating conclusion. The investigation led authorities to believe that Williams had shot both Whitney and Johnson before taking his own life.
In the hours following the incident, the Omaha Police Department characterized the shooting as a domestic incident and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. With the determination that Williams was the sole actor in the shootings and had died by suicide, the investigation concluded. Consequently, no arrests were made, and the police did not seek any other suspects in connection with the case.
