On August 3, 2020, Bennie Antonio Cartwright, a 36-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident. The Omaha Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the early morning hours around North 28th Avenue and Bristol Street in north Omaha. Upon arrival, officers discovered Cartwright already deceased from gunshot wounds.
Initially, no arrests were made, and the police sought public assistance in gathering information about the shooting.
However, on August 10, 2020, the Omaha Police Department announced the arrest of three individuals in connection with Cartwright's death. Dalon Sherman, 18, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and a weapons charge. Two other teenagers, Janaeco Richards, 19, and Jordan Phillips, 18, were also apprehended. Richards faced charges of being an accessory to a felony, while Phillips was arrested on suspicion of tampering with evidence.
Bennie Cartwright was born on August 22, 1983, in Helena, Arkansas, to Flora Lee Cartwright and Bennie Jones. He was the fifth child in his family. In 1996, Cartwright moved to Omaha, Nebraska, with his family, where he continued his education in the Omaha Public Schools system. He left behind several daughters: LaTasha Primes, Jania Cole, LeAndrah Brown, Emily Fox, and Merimichell Lee Cartwright. Cartwright is also survived by his father, Bennie Jones, step-father Carl Meridy, siblings, and numerous extended family members.
The untimely death of Bennie Cartwright serves as a somber reminder of the impact of gun violence on communities and families. His loss was mourned by many, and his memory lives on through those who knew and loved him.
