In the small community of Superior, Nebraska, the autumn of 2021 was shattered by a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of Darin Koepke, a 53-year-old White/Caucasian male. On October 21, 2021, what began as a normal workday at the Agrex Inc. grain elevator would end in bloodshed and sorrow. Koepke, a respected assistant regional manager for the western division of the company, found himself in the midst of a horrific workplace shooting.
The perpetrator, identified as
61-year-old Max Hoskinson of Superior, had been terminated from his job at the facility earlier that day. In a devastating turn of events, Hoskinson returned to the grain elevator with a firearm and opened fire on his former colleagues. The sudden eruption of violence left the employees in a state of terror. During the chaos, Darin Koepke was critically wounded. He was airlifted to Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln for medical treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The rampage also claimed the life of 60-year-old Sandra Nelson of Formoso, Kansas, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. A third victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. The deadly assault was brought to an end when another Agrex employee retrieved a shotgun from an office and returned fire, striking and killing Hoskinson.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Nebraska State Patrol launched a thorough investigation. After consulting with the Nuckolls County Attorney's Office and the Nebraska Attorney General's Office, it was determined that the employee who shot Hoskinson acted in defense of himself and others. Consequently, no charges were filed in relation to his actions. The investigation concluded that Hoskinson was the sole perpetrator, and with his death, the case was closed without any further arrests. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of Darin Koepke and Sandra Nelson, two lives cut short in a place of work that became a scene of unimaginable violence.
