On a summer evening in the small town of Broadwater, Nebraska, the life of Rodney Eugene Bennett, a 57-year-old Caucasian male, came to a tragic and unexpected end. On August 8, 2022, a heated argument between Bennett and his son, Joseph Bennett, escalated with fatal consequences. The disagreement took place at the home of Rodney's mother, where the two men were present.
According to later reports, Rodney had been drinking and became embroiled in a dispute with his son.
The verbal altercation turned violent when Joseph Bennett retrieved a revolver. He fired the weapon, striking his father. Shortly after the shooting, Joseph's grandmother placed a harrowing 911 call, reporting that her grandson had shot her son. When Morrill County sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence, they took 32-year-old Joseph into custody without incident. Paramedics attended to Rodney Bennett and transported him to Morrill County Community Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Joseph Bennett was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He told investigators that the shooting occurred after an argument with his father, who he stated was intoxicated at the time. At the scene, authorities recovered a revolver and two spent shell casings. As the legal process unfolded, Joseph Bennett eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder on May 2, 2023. The charge of use of a firearm to commit a felony was dropped as part of the plea agreement. On July 3, 2023, a district judge sentenced him to 20 to 30 years in prison for the death of his father.
