Weeks before his death, Miller had been wounded in a separate encounter in downtown Washington that began with a fistfight and escalated to gunfire near Dupont Circle just after midnight on January 19, 2003.
In that incident, later detailed in a District of Columbia Court of Appeals opinion, Miller was shot and survived, while his companion Stephen Turner was killed; John Tyler was subsequently convicted of murder while armed for Turner’s death and assault with intent to kill while armed for the shooting of Miller. There is no court record indicating that this conviction involved Miller’s later March 1 homicide, which is treated as a separate case.
