In the winter of 2022, a dispute between friends over a flat tire escalated into a fatal encounter, claiming the life of Daron "Bruno" Hunter, a 46-year-old Black / African American man. On the night of January 27th, in Omaha, Nebraska, what began as an attempt to fix a tire devolved into a heated argument. Following the disagreement, as Hunter got into his car to drive away, he was shot. Officers responded to a call around 11 p.m.
in a residential area and discovered Hunter inside his vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect who was reportedly a friend of Hunter. The day after the shooting, Omaha police arrested 37-year-old William Snoddy in connection with the incident. Snoddy, an ex-convict, was charged with first-degree murder and three weapons-related offenses for his alleged role in Hunter's death. At the time of the shooting, Snoddy had recently been released from jail for a separate 2020 strangulation case.
During a subsequent court hearing, a police detective testified that the altercation started while Hunter and Snoddy were trying to repair a flat tire. After the argument, as Hunter attempted to leave, Snoddy allegedly fired a gun at the car four times, striking Hunter twice in the chest. Snoddy's public defender suggested that the shooting may have been in self-defense, claiming that Hunter might have veered the car toward Snoddy. Following the hearing, a judge ordered William Snoddy to stand trial for the murder of his friend, Daron Hunter.
