A holiday evening turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, ending in the death of 10-year-old Kendrick McDonald. The young, White/Caucasian male was fatally shot late that night, just after 11:30 p.m. The incident unfolded at his own home, transforming a day of gratitude into one of profound loss for his family and the community.
Responding to a report of a shooting, Omaha police officers arrived to find Kendrick suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported by the Omaha Fire Department to a nearby hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the devastating event swiftly led to the arrest of a suspect distressingly close to the young victim. Kendrick's father, 47-year-old Will McDonald, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He now faces a series of grave charges, including criminal homicide, use of a weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Following his arrest, Will McDonald was booked into the Douglas County Jail, where he is being held without bail. The Omaha Police Department has publicly extended its deepest condolences to Kendrick's grieving family as the investigation continues.
As law enforcement officials delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Kendrick's death, a heartbreaking narrative has begun to emerge. Investigators are exploring the possibility that the shooting was a tragic accident, spurred by a mistaken identity in the dead of night. According to reports, a car alarm may have gone off near the McDonald's residence, prompting Will McDonald to go outside and investigate. It is believed that in the darkness, he may have tragically mistaken his son for a car thief. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine stated that after firing the shot, Will McDonald realized the person approaching was his 10-year-old son. Police recovered a handgun at the scene, and it was also revealed that other children were present in the house at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to this lamentable outcome.
