Kainami Grant, a 15-year-old Black / African American male, was killed on the night of January 6, 2020, after a shooting in Dover, Delaware. Police said the violence unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. in an alley at the rear of Paul Street, near Davis Circle. Even after being shot multiple times, Kainami was still able to call 911 himself and report that he had been wounded.
When Dover police officers arrived, they found Kainami conscious but badly injured.
There were no witnesses in the immediate area when police got there, leaving investigators with few immediate answers about who had opened fire or what led to the shooting. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to Kent General Hospital, but he died from his injuries there.
Police initially did not know Kainami's identity. Investigators later confirmed who he was through fingerprints, which allowed them to notify his family. Public reports described him as being from Milford, while obituary information identified him as being from Ellendale and said he attended High Roads in Felton. He was remembered as someone who enjoyed being with his family, especially playing video games with his brothers, and as a teenager who liked football, basketball, drawing, cooking, the outdoors, and therapeutic horseback riding.
The case remained open as a homicide investigation. Early reports said no suspects had been arrested, and police publicly asked anyone with information to contact the Dover Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Delaware Crime Stoppers. A reward of up to $1,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest.
Years later, the case was still being described publicly as unsolved. In a 2025 report, Dover police continued asking for information and said investigators believed people connected to the killing may have spoken to others afterward. Authorities emphasized that firsthand information about what those individuals said could be valuable in helping bring closure to Kainami's family.
