Tyaire Darnell Anderson, a 29-year-old Black/African American male from Wilmington, Delaware, was shot on September 25, 2021, in a broad daylight attack on the 400 block of North Monroe Street. Police responded around midday and found Anderson critically wounded. He was taken to Christiana Hospital, but he later died from his injuries. Two juveniles were also struck by stray bullets and survived with non-fatal injuries.
The shooting unfolded in the middle of the afternoon, turning a
Wilmington block into a crime scene where investigators began piecing together what had happened. Later court records described surveillance video that captured the shooter's movements before, during, and after the attack. Although the shooter's face was masked, investigators focused on distinctive details: a black Nike hoodie worn on a hot day, unusual sneakers, a particular outward-pointing walk, and the shooter's height. Police also noted that the shooter appeared to speak with two people just before the gunfire.
By December 2021, authorities had arrested and charged Tyrell Reid in connection with Anderson's death. Reid, then 30, was indicted by a grand jury for murder and related offenses. Early reports said no motive had been released, and Reid was held on $1.3 million bail after the indictment.
Prosecutors later said Reid approached Anderson on North Monroe Street and shot him multiple times at point-blank range. The case against Reid included surveillance evidence tying him to the shooter's clothing, height, sneakers, and distinctive gait. Investigators also relied on additional evidence developed after the shooting, including testimony and recorded calls that became part of later appellate arguments.
Reid was charged with Murder First Degree, three counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Assault First Degree involving one juvenile victim, Assault First Degree involving a second juvenile victim, and Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited. Before trial, prosecutors offered plea deals involving manslaughter and firearm charges, but Reid rejected them.
In June 2024, Reid went to trial in New Castle County Superior Court. A jury convicted him of Murder First Degree, Assault First Degree, Attempted Assault First Degree, and multiple firearm offenses. The firearm-possession-by-a-prohibited-person charge was handled separately in a bench trial, and the judge also found Reid guilty on that count.
On October 25, 2024, Reid was sentenced to life imprisonment for Anderson's murder, plus an additional 36 years of unsuspended prison time for the remaining charges. Reid appealed, arguing that the trial court mishandled certain impeachment evidence and should have given the jury a cautionary instruction related to his pretrial custody status. On December 30, 2025, the Delaware Supreme Court affirmed the judgment, leaving his convictions and sentence in place.
